The Seahawks signed tackle Kyle Williams from the practice squad to the 53-man roster Saturday in time to play today at Indianapolis.
Seattle released fullback Justin Griffith to make room for Williams on the roster. Griffith suffered a knee injury two weeks ago and was questionable to play this week. Griffith was the starting fullback when the season began. Owen Schmitt started in his place last week.
Williams' addition gives the Seahawks more depth on the offensive line. Left tackle Brandon Frye and left guard Rob Sims are both expected to play, but both were limited in practice last week. Frye has a groin injury, Sims a strained oblique.
Williams started at tackle toward the end of last season, and he also played some guard in training camp so he provides a multiposition contingency plan for an offensive line that will start a different configuration for the third consecutive week.
49ers forge ahead
without Gore
SAN FRANCISCO — The San Francisco 49ers (2-1) won't have standout running back Frank Gore to lead their rushing offense against the St. Louis Rams (0-3). Not that 49ers coach Mike Singletary wants quarterback Shaun Hill to stray from what has worked for the team so far: the ground game.
"We're not going to alter it one bit," Singletary said. "Obviously, you're missing one of the best backs in the league. ... There will be no, 'Shaun, you have to take it and put it on you.' No. We are going to run our offense."
Rookie Glen Coffee of Alabama will replace Gore, who has an ankle injury.
Hill will try to improve his 6-0 home record at Candlestick Park, where San Francisco looks to take a stronger hold on first place in the NFC West after already beating reigning division champion Arizona and the Seahawks.
Rams quarterback Marc Bulger probably will miss the game with a bruised rotator cuff, meaning Kyle Boller would start in his place.
"I think their strength is their linebackers; they're playing great this year," Boller said of the 49ers. "Coach Singletary, I was with him in Baltimore, and I know his attitude."

Note
• Cleveland running back James Davis, a rookie from Clemson, will miss the rest of the season because of a shoulder injury. The Browns placed him on injured reserve.
