Walter Jones, Chris Spencer out for Seahawks opener
Injured offensive linemen could play in second game.

RENTON — Left tackle Walter Jones went 10 seasons without missing a game because of injury.
For the second time in two seasons, knee surgery will keep him from taking the field.
Jones has been declared out for the Seahawks' season opener against St. Louis on Sunday. Same for center Chris Spencer, who suffered a slight tear of his quadriceps. Coach Jim Mora said it's possible both could be ready next week.
"We'll just see where we are next week," Mora said.
Sean Locklear will replace Jones at left tackle, and Steve Vallos will start at center.
Wide receiver Deion Branch did not practice Wednesday, and his injury was listed as a hamstring. He appeared to suffer the injury to his right leg at the end of Monday's practice.
Seahawks expect Bulger
St. Louis quarterback Marc Bulger took direct snaps Wednesday for the first time since suffering a broken pinkie finger that kept him out the final three exhibition games.
St. Louis coach Steve Spagnuolo said that while he had not spoken with Bulger about the snaps, everything appeared fine.
"He seemed to be doing OK," Spagnuolo said in a conference call with Seattle reporters.
Safety first
Mora said the promotion of Jordan Babineaux to starting free safety came from a belief he can pick up production by picking off more passes. Safety Brian Russell intercepted one pass in his two years as Seattle's starting free safety.

"We all recognize the fact that we need more plays to be made by our safeties," Mora said. "That is a position that we haven't had a lot of playmaking production out of.
"They've made tackles and they've made the plays they are supposed to, but we think Babs gives us a chance to maybe make some special plays."
Notes
• Veteran Justin Griffith will start at fullback and be backed up by Owen Schmitt.
• Safety C.J. Wallace (rib), cornerback Travis Fisher (hamstring) and DE Derek Walker (hamstring) all sat out practice on Wednesday, but have not been ruled out for this weekend's game.
