5 questions with ...
Nick ReedDE, 6-2, 245, Age: 21
Reed is the youngest player on Seattle's roster, a seventh-round draft pick from Oregon whose 29.5 career sacks for the Ducks set a school record and ranked fourth in Pac-10 history:
Seattle Times: This might be a touchy subject, but complete the following sentence: The University of Washington (fill in the blank).
Reed: Never beat me.
ST: What was the first poster you put up on your wall?
Reed: "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid." I'm a big movie fan.
ST: Well, what's your favorite then?
Reed: "Tombstone."
ST: What was the biggest adjustment when you moved to Oregon from Southern California?
Reed: The people are so different, and in a good way. I really like the people. It's more laid back. You notice it most on the road when you're driving. Everyone is so friendly, they let you in.
ST: Is there a CD on your iPod people would be surprised to know that you have?
Reed: Taylor Swift.
Danny O'Neil
Voice of a champion
Coach Jim Mora used a quotation from Bill Russell in a speech to his team earlier in training camp. On Thursday, he showed them a highlight video detailing Russell's accomplishments. And then, out came Russell, who received a standing ovation from the team and then delivered an hourlong speech. "The guy is the ultimate winner," Mora said.
Hush? Not Housh
T.J. Houshmandzadeh has the deep voice that a late-night FM DJ would envy, and Seattle's new receiver provides a pretty steady soundtrack during practice with his talk to teammates. Can talking help against an opponent in a game? "With somebody that's mentally weak," Houshmandzadeh said. "And there's a lot of those out there, so of course."
Playbook's new page
The Seahawks offense practiced a five-wide, shotgun formation on Friday morning, showing that while Seattle might be using the principles of a West Coast passing game, this won't be the same offense as last season.
Clank
Receiver Jordan Kent is fighting to hold onto a roster spot at wide receiver, but he couldn't grab hold of the ball after breaking wide open for what should have been a touchdown in a seven-on-seven drill in the morning.
