Stallworth begins serving jail term

MIAMI — As a newly convicted felon, NFL player Donte' Stallworth will spend a month in jail, two years under house arrest and eight years on probation — but his football career likely will survive.

The Cleveland Browns wide receiver, in pleading guilty Tuesday to DUI manslaughter, also will spend years publicly recounting his ultimate mistake, made the March morning he hit and killed crane operator Mario Reyes in Miami Beach.

As part of his plea deal, Stallworth must perform 1,000 hours of community service, which likely will involve public service announcements and speeches to youth warning of the perils of drunken driving.

Miami-Dade State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle bristled at the notion that Stallworth, 28, got off easy, pointing to his consistent remorse and the Reyes family's desire to avoid protracted legal proceedings.

Notes

• As the Brandon Marshall holdout saga becomes increasingly agitated, Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels has attempted to send a message of peace.

Marshall's agent, Kennard McGuire, made an aggressive negotiating move Tuesday by telling Denver television station Fox 31 News that Marshall had requested a trade during the receiver's one-on-one meeting with Broncos' owner Pat Bowlen on Friday.

The meeting occurred after Marshall skipped the mandatory minicamp session that morning. Marshall later was spotted carrying packed boxes to his car before leaving team headquarters.

He's scheduled to make $2.2 million in 2009 and he wants more money, befitting a player who has posted consecutive 100-catch seasons and went to the Pro Bowl after last season. But he has health and legal issues that leave him with little, if any, leverage.

• The New England Patriots have signed Penn State offensive linemen Rich Ohrnberger, their fourth-round draft pick.
