Brett Favre, Vikings coach Brad Childress reportedly will meet this week

Citing an anonymous source "with direct knowledge of the discussions between the two parties," ESPN reported Tuesday that quarterback Brett Favre is scheduled to meet with Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress later this week about a possible comeback.

MINNEAPOLIS — Citing an anonymous source "with direct knowledge of the discussions between the two parties," ESPN reported Tuesday that quarterback Brett Favre is scheduled to meet with Minnesota Vikings coach Brad Childress later this week about a possible comeback.

Both Favre and his agent, Bus Cook, have said this spring the three-time league most valuable player intends to stay retired. But the 39-year-old Favre's statement after he was released from the reserve-retired list by the New York Jets last week seemingly left the door open.

"At this time, I am retired and have no intention of returning to football," he said.

Vikings sign ex-Husky Garcia

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. — Minnesota signed ex-Washington Huskies center Juan Garcia of Yakima.

Garcia was brought to a rookie minicamp that included most of the Vikings' draft picks and several rookie free agents.

Garcia lacked a contract during the minicamp, but took advantage of the opportunity to impress coaches and earn a contract.

Despite injuries, Garcia ended his UW career last year with 37 consecutive starts.

Notes

• Suspended Atlanta quarterback Michael Vick and former Indianapolis coach Tony Dungy met at the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan., where Vick is imprisoned.

"It was a private meeting between Mike and coach Dungy and a positive meeting," said Vick's agent, Joel Segal.

Vick, 28, is serving a 23-month sentence for bankrolling a dogfighting conspiracy. He is to be transferred May 21 to home confinement in Hampton, Va., through July 31.

Larry Foote, 28, released by Pittsburgh on Monday after asking to be cut or traded, said he is close to agreement on a one-year deal with the Detroit Lions.

• New England signed safety Brandon McGowan, 25, previously with the Chicago Bears.

• Indianapolis re-signed defensive tackle Ed Johnson, 25, who was waived last season after being charged with drug possession.

• Cleveland signed receiver Mike Furrey, 31, previously with Detroit.

• The New Orleans Saints cut receiver Biren Ealy, 24, and tight end Kolomona Kapanui, 25, two days after the players were arrested for allegedly being drunk and exposing themselves to two women in the parking lot of a River Ridge, La., apartment complex.
