NFL | Washington acquires All-Pro Albert Haynesworth

ASHBURN, Va. — After signing a contract with Washington for a league-record $41 million in guaranteed money, Albert Haynesworth made a guarantee of his own.

"You're not going to remember Albert Haynesworth as a bust," he said.

That's a tall order, even for a player as talented as Haynesworth. The 27-year-old All-Pro defensive tackle, previously with the Tennessee Titans, has to live up to the $100 million, seven-year contract he signed Friday.

Washington maintained form by snagging the biggest name available with a blockbuster deal within hours of the start of free agency.

"With the contract, it's going to be all on me," Haynesworth said. "My goal is to be the best player on the field and to eventually get to that Hall of Fame status and be mentioned with Reggie White and Bruce Smith and all the greats."

Washington re-signed cornerback DeAngelo Hall, 25, to a $54 million, six-year deal that includes $22.5 million guaranteed.

All this from a franchise that has laid off at least 30 people since the start of the year in two rounds of cutbacks.

Washington added another name to the unemployment rolls by cutting oft-injured cornerback Shawn Springs, 33, a former Seahawk deemed expendable after Hall was re-signed.

In other major moves around the league, tight end Kellen Winslow was traded from Cleveland to Tampa Bay for draft picks; the Titans re-signed 36-year-old quarterback Kerry Collins for two years and $15 million; New England signed 33-year-old Fred Taylor, who is 16th on the league's career rushing list and was cut last week by Jacksonville after 11 seasons; and the New York Jets bolstered their defense, signing former Baltimore linebacker Bart Scott to a six-year, $48 million deal.

In return for Winslow, the Browns get Tampa Bay's second-round pick this year and a fifth-round choice in 2010.

Haynesworth's guaranteed payout tops the $37 million the Atlanta Falcons gave quarterback Michael Vick in 2004. Haynesworth will receive $32 million of the guaranteed money in the next 13 months. Hall reportedly got $22.5 million in guarantees.
