NFL | Weapons, ammo seized at Plaxico Burress' New Jersey home

TOTOWA, N.J. — The bloody pants that Plaxico Burress wore when he accidentally shot himself last month, plus a handgun, a rifle and an assortment of ammunition were seized Tuesday by authorities from the home of the New York Giants receiver.

In addition to a 9-mm handgun, a .30-06-caliber rifle and the ammunition, including a clip for a .45 gun, police also said they recovered the sneakers that Burress wore during the accidental shooting during the three-hour search of the Super Bowl star's Totowa home.

Investigators are trying to determine whether the weapons are registered, so it is unclear whether Burress will face additional charges.

Totowa police chief Robert Coyle said it is hard to successfully prosecute someone if they have legally registered weapons in one state and stored them in New Jersey.

Burress still faces two felony gun-possession charges following the accidental shooting at a Manhattan nightclub last month.

Romo misses practice

IRVING, Texas — Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo was sent home early and did not practice Wednesday because of an illness.

Considering the circumstances surrounding Sunday's game, it would seem odd that Romo would miss any practice time. But Romo practiced Tuesday when the coaches installed the game plan, and he's expected to practice on Thursday.

"We did have an extra day [this week]," coach Wade Phillips said. "Tuesday was a really good day for us as far as practice was concerned. It was a longer practice, and we put in all our stuff on Tuesday."

Wide receiver Patrick Crayton acknowledged that it wasn't the ideal situation.

"It's not an injury," Crayton said. "We'll shoot him up, dope him up, he'll be all right. As long as it's not on the banned steroid list, we'll be good. We'll take care of him."

• St. Louis Rams president John Shaw resigned after 29 years with the franchise and Billy Devaney was promoted to general manager.

The two moves in a front office overhaul by a franchise that's been among the NFL's worst the last few seasons followed the resignation Monday of Jay Zygmunt as president of football operations. The Rams are 2-13 heading into Sunday's finale at Atlanta, and are 5-26 the last two seasons.

• NFL receiving leader Wes Welker has been fined $10,000 for making a "snow angel" after scoring a touchdown for the New England Patriots last Sunday.

Welker, who leads the league with 109 receptions, fell to the ground on his back just behind the end zone and brushed both arms and legs back and forth in the snow after catching an 11-yard pass from Matt Cassel in the second quarter.

• Mike Singletary has been a remarkable short-term solution to the San Francisco 49ers' woes. With each passing week, the interim coach is looking more like the long-term fix as well.

When the 49ers (6-9) began preparations Wednesday for their season finale against Washington, Singletary acknowledged meeting with the team's top officials about his future earlier in the week. According to The Sacramento Bee, Singletary laid out a plan for the 49ers that wowed the club's leadership, which could announce Singletary's appointment to the full-time job early next week.

• Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers said having offseason surgery on his right shoulder is a possibility. "We'll take a look at that after the season, probably," Rodgers said. Rodgers played several games with a painful shoulder sprain but did not miss a start.

• Indianapolis middle linebacker Gary Brackett (leg), outside linebacker Freddy Keiaho (hamstring) and running back Dominic Rhodes (chest) will not play against Tennessee.
