Matt Hasselbeck doubtful for Sunday

The Seahawks are facing Sunday's game without QB Matt Hasselbeck, who is still dealing with complications from a back injury from earlier this season.

Seattle Times staff reporter

RENTON — Matt Hasselbeck is doubtful to play Sunday against the New England Patriots after missing much of Friday's practice.

Based on how things have gone this season, this wasn't a shocker.

Hasselbeck, limited in practice all week, is dealing with complications from a bulging disk in his back that has caused him to miss five games this season. It didn't help that he was sacked seven times in the loss at Dallas on Thanksgiving. He has had more than a week to try to heal.

Whether the quarterback plays will be a game-day decision, coach Mike Holmgren said.

Seneca Wallace, who's made four starts this season, will step in if Hasselbeck is out.

Perhaps not having the Pro Bowl quarterback is a blessing in disguise, as the Seahawks might also be without star left tackle Walter Jones for the game. Jones didn't practice all week — he usually misses just one day — and Seattle made a roster move Friday, placing starting left guard Mike Wahle on injured reserve with a shoulder injury. Wahle's season is over.

Jones is listed as questionable for Sunday with a sore knee.

Earlier this week, center Chris Spencer was placed on injured reserve. He and Wahle were the second and third offensive-line starters to have their seasons ended early with injury, joining right guard Rob Sims.

So when Wallace takes the field, assuming Hasselbeck won't play, he'll potentially have this line to protect him: Sean Locklear, who moves from right tackle to left; Floyd Womack, Wahle's replacement at left guard; Steve Vallos at center, who will make his second career NFL start in place of Spencer; Mansfield Wrotto, poised to start for the first time in his career, at right guard; and Ray Willis at right tackle.

Willis opened the season as the starter at that spot when Locklear was injured, then moved to right guard when Womack had to go over to the left side.

Jones, a 12th-year pro who has been to eight Pro Bowls, has started all 190 games he has played for Seattle, including the postseason. He missed one game last season, the regular-season finale which he was allowed to sit out.

"The guys that show up will play hard, and we'll coach them and we'll do the best we can," Holmgren said.

Surgery for Wahle

Wahle, who missed the past two games, will need an operation on his right shoulder, but the good news is that he didn't tear the labrum, which he has done in that shoulder before. He expects to be out three or four months and hopes to regain the range of motion he didn't have after his most recent shoulder surgery.

"It just wasn't in the cards," he said about hoping to play again this season. "We tried everything short of surgery to get me ready to play."

Wahle, signed in free agency this past offseason, started 10 games before aggravating an already existing shoulder injury against Arizona on Nov. 16. He had no strength in his arm after leaving the Arizona game.

Seattle signed center-guard Steve McKinney to fill the roster spot vacated by Wahle. McKinney, who was at practice Friday, has played 10 seasons in the NFL — four with Indianapolis followed by six with the Houston Texans. He was in the Miami Dolphins' training camp this past summer.

A former fourth-round draft choice by the Colts (1998), McKinney has started 133 of the 143 games he has played.
