MNF | Steelers' defense excels against Redskins

LANDOVER, Md. — Byron Leftwich led two touchdown drives after Ben Roethlisberger reinjured his throwing shoulder as the Pittsburgh Steelers beat Washington 23-6 Monday night.

The Steelers' top-rated defense had seven sacks, allowed a mere 221 yards and became the first team this season to intercept a Jason Campbell pass. Leftwich went 7 of 10 for 129 yards and a touchdown as the AFC North-leading Steelers (6-2) dominated after Washington (6-3) took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.

Roethlisberger was 5 of 17 for 50 yards and an interception before leaving the game at halftime, hindered by a slightly separated shoulder that has bothered him since the second week of the season.

Asked if the injury was serious, Roethlisberger said, "I hope not. We'll find out."

Leftwich's 50-yard completion to Nate Washington set up a 1-yard TD run by Willie Parker, who was back from a four-week layoff caused by a knee injury. Leftwich had a 5-yard scoring pass to Santonio Holmes, who returned from a one-game benching over a charge for a marijuana-related offense.

"I truly don't know the offense yet," said Leftwich, who signed with the Steelers in August.

Pittsburgh held Clinton Portis to 51 yards rushing on 13 carries, ending his streak of five games with at least 120 yards.

Sports-themed interviews with presidential candidates Barack Obama and John McCain were broadcast by ESPN during halftime of the election-eve game.
