Matt Hasselbeck's status for Sunday game in doubt

The status of Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck will be a "game-time decision," according to Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren. Hasselbeck has a sore knee and might not be able to play Sunday when the Seahawks play the Green Bay Packer. If Hasselbeck doesn't play, Charlie Frye would likely be the starter.

RENTON — Matt Hasselbeck's availability for Sunday's game against Green Bay is in doubt after the Seahawks quarterback missed practiced for the third consecutive day.

"It will be a game-day decision there," coach Mike Holmgren said today.

Hasselbeck suffered a knee injury in the first quarter against the New York Giants when he was trapped between New York linemen Fred Robbins and Justin Tuck after releasing a pass. He was able to finish the game, but said afterward he hyperextended the knee.

"The thing just has not responded," Holmgren said. "He can't do much. It's not ligaments. It's nothing like that. It's just sore."

Backup quarterback Seneca Wallace returned to practice in a limited capacity, but he is unlikely to start, Holmgren said. He is still affected by a calf injury he suffered Wednesday morning.

That leaves third-string quarterback Charlie Frye in line to start if Hasselbeck is unavailable.

"It appears as though Charlie will play in the game," Holmgren said.

Frye started the regular-season opener for Cleveland last year, but was traded after that game to the Seahawks. He has not appeared in a game for the Seahawks. Frye was drafted out of Akron in 2005.

Holmgren said Hasselbeck has not been cleared to play yet. Holmgren said earlier this week that it was possible Hasselbeck could play without practicing this week. Today, the coach wasn't so sure that would be the case.

"I made the statement if he didn't practice all week he could play on Sunday," Holmgren said. "But I've got to feel like he is not too vulnerable out there."
