DENVER — A 25-year-old man was indicted Wednesday on first-degree murder charges in the drive-by shooting death of Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams on New Year's Day 2007.
Willie D. Clark faces 39 counts, including murder, attempted murder, assault, crimes of violence and a weapons violation, said Mitch Morrissey, Denver district attorney.
Clark is in federal custody in a separate case. He was long considered a "person of interest" in Williams' slaying but is the first suspect to be indicted.
Williams' mother, Rosalind Williams of Fort Worth, Texas, said the indictment brought her peace but also dredged up painful memories.
"There's still a long ways to go, a long trial ahead," she said. "And we have to make sure this doesn't happen to another family, too."
Williams, a former Oklahoma State standout, was shot and killed while riding in a limousine early on Jan. 1, 2007, after leaving the Safari Club, a Denver nightclub. He was 24.
The indictment said Williams and Clark were at the club with separate groups of friends and there was an altercation between the two groups. Quoting witnesses, it said Clark got into an SUV, followed the limo carrying Williams and opened fire.
At least 15 shots were fired into the limo. Williams was shot in the neck, and two other passengers were wounded.
Ex-Husky needs more tests
ST. LOUIS — Rams wide receiver Dane Looker, a former Washington Husky, will have additional tests designed to rule out an aneurysm after a CAT scan that cleared him from a concussion revealed a brain abnormality.
Team medical personnel believe the abnormality is unrelated to the concussion Looker suffered against the Buffalo Bills on Sept. 28.

• New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady underwent surgery on his left knee this week, a month after he was sidelined with the season-ending injury.
• Detroit quarterback Jon Kitna had an MRI exam on his injured back and could miss Sunday's game at Minnesota. The former Seahawk missed practice, putting his streak of 36 consecutive starts in jeopardy.
• The New Orleans Saints placed kicker Martin Gramatica (groin) on injured reserve and re-signed sixth-round draft pick Taylor Mehlhaff.
• Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer will limit his throwing during practice this week to rest his sore elbow, hoping to be ready for the New York Jets on Sunday.
• Jets safety Eric Smith will sit out this week's game against the Cincinnati Bengals after the NFL upheld his one-game suspension for a helmet-to-helmet hit on Arizona wide receiver Anquan Boldin.
• Indianapolis Colts starting cornerback Kelvin Hayden won't play against Baltimore on Sunday because of a left-knee injury.
• Dallas Cowboys cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones was involved in a fight with one of his bodyguards, according to Dallas police, the night before attending a previously scheduled team meeting with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. No one was arrested and no one will be charged in connection with the fight late Tuesday at an upscale downtown hotel.
• The Detroit Lions confirmed an arbitrator ruled first-round bust Charles Rogers has to give the Lions about $8.5 million of the more than $14 million he received in bonus money. The Lions filed a grievance in 2005, claiming Rogers diminished his value to the team by failing a drug test earlier that season.
• Former Denver Broncos running back Travis Henry could be released from jail today after posting a $400,000 bond on federal drug charges.
• Wide receiver Marvin Harrison is being sued by a man who says he was shot in the hand and body in April by the Indianapolis Colts star. Harrison, who was never arrested or charged, is being sued by Dwight Dixon for $100,000.
• Jacksonville Jaguars receiver Matt Jones' cocaine charge will be heard in drug court in Fayetteville, Ark., rather than in the regular criminal system, allowing him to keep any conviction off his record.
