NFL Notebook | Tony Gonzalez gets TE yards mark

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Tony Gonzalez got his record, but not much else.

The Kansas City star broke the NFL's career mark for yards receiving by a tight end Sunday, but finished with just three catches for 17 yards in a 34-0 loss to the Carolina Panthers.

"This is a game that a lot of us probably [would] just as soon forget," Gonzalez said.

Gonzalez entered the game 3 yards shy of Shannon Sharpe's 5-year-old record of 10,060 yards. He surpassed the mark on Kansas City's second offensive series by catching a 6-yard pass from former Husky Damon Huard late in the first quarter.

The 12th-year pro and nine-time Pro Bowler has at least one reception in 120 consecutive games.

"It's bittersweet — I'm happy for it, don't get me wrong," Gonzalez said. "It took a long time to get [the record], and I've been very fortunate to be around some good offensive coordinators ... great quarterbacks. It's just been a long time, and I'm very fortunate to be able to last that long. So I'm going to take it, take it in stride — I'm happy for it. But I wish, obviously, if it could have come in a different circumstance, it probably would have been a lot better."

Gonzalez wound up with his fewest yards receiving since he also had 17 yards on three catches on Dec. 16, 2007, in a 26-17 loss to Tennessee, yet bumped up his career total to 10,074 yards.

Goodell won't interfere with Raiders dispute on his own

HOUSTON — NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has not received a grievance from former Raiders coach Lane Kiffin in the wake of his bitter split with team owner Al Davis last week.

Davis said Tuesday that Kiffin was fired for cause, meaning the Raiders will not pay him for the remainder of the three-year deal worth about $6 million. Kiffin's agent, Gary Uberstine, said Kiffin will talk to the commissioner.

"No one ever likes to see a dispute like that happen," Goodell said. "Mr. Davis made it very clear he didn't like it. It was clear that coach Kiffin was uncomfortable under the current circumstances.

"It's something that's unfortunate. You don't want to see it happen."

Goodell expects a grievance to be filed, but added he would not intervene in the situation until he is asked to.

"It's a reality of our business," Goodell said. "They've moved on now. If I'm involved in some fashion, or asked to be involved or required to be involved, I will certainly fulfill my responsibility. But I don't think [there's] anything else to say other than it's an unfortunate situation."

Niners retire Young's jersey

SAN FRANCISCO — As Steve Young listened to the Candlestick Park crowd roar at his jersey retirement ceremony, he looked at Jerry Rice and wished he was in his old No. 8 uniform instead of a suit.

"Honestly I feel like I want to play," Young said after the ceremony. "My life is sublime now and great and wonderful in many ways but you can't replace it."

Colts pull off amazing rally

HOUSTON — Houston tight end Owen Daniels was crushed, awed, groping.

"Do you guys believe that happened?" Daniels asked reporters after the Indianapolis Colts made up a 17-point deficit in the final five minutes Sunday to beat the Texans 31-27 at Reliant Stadium.

"I said a sec ago, if I watched a movie and that happened, I'd be like, OK, that's not really real. That's not going to happen in real life. A team would take care of that situation and get a win even if by a couple points. It's not funny, but I almost want to just laugh about it because it's so unbelievable."

Sage Rosenfels wasn't laughing. He had gone from hero to fall guy in four very short and frantic minutes.

Rosenfels took over at quarterback for Houston because starter Matt Schaub was unable to play after spending Saturday night in a hospital with an intestinal infection.

For 56 minutes, Rosenfels made the reads, the throws, the plays. He directed the Texans to a 27-10 lead. Then it all fell apart: two lost fumbles and an interception in the final four minutes.

"We played as good as we can play for 3 ½ quarters and I feel like I let all 53 guys and all 15 of our coaches down," said Rosenfels, who has started only eight games in eight NFL seasons.

The threat barely registered when the Colts drove 81 yards to cut the deficit to 27-17 with 4:04 to play. But three plays after the kickoff, on third-and-eight from the Colts 39, Rosenfels rolled left. He attempted to leap for a final yard or two and a hugely important first down.

Colts lineman Raheem Brock hit him and knocked the football loose. Linebacker Gary Brackett returned the fumble 68 yards for a touchdown to make it 27-24 with 3:36 to play.

The Colts kicked off. Three plays later, Rosenfels was trying to convert third down again. He rolled left again. He had running back Steve Slaton open.

Colts end Robert Mathis caught Rosenfels from behind, stripped him and recovered the fumble at the Houston 20 to set up the winning touchdown.

Notes

• Panthers kicker John Kasay was 2 for 2 on field goals, giving him 368 and moving past Norm Johnson for ninth on the career list.

• A charitable campaign set up by the Houston Texans to benefit victims of Hurricane Ike has raised $2.45 million. The campaign was announced before the Texans' Sept. 21 game against Tennessee. Texans owner Bob McNair donated $500,000 and the NFL and its players' association matched McNair's contribution with a $500,000 donation to the league's disaster relief fund.
