The NFL suspended defensive back Jordan Babineaux and defensive tackle Rocky Bernard for the first game of the regular season, and the Seahawks announced their 53-man active roster Saturday.
Babineaux was fined two game checks for violating the league's substance abuse policy and Bernard one game check for violating the league's personal conduct policy. Bernard's suspension stems from his assault charge and subsequent arrest earlier this year.
Former Washington Husky Larry Tripplett had his contracted terminated and former Washington State Cougar Michael Bumpus was among the players cut as the Seahawks made decisions on 20 players to get the number down to the NFL-mandated limit to start the regular season.
Wide receiver Ben Obomanu and defensive lineman Chris Cooper were placed on injured reserve. Wide receiver Bryan Gilmore and defensive tackle Tripplett had their contracts terminated. The following players were waived: defensive back Jamar Adams, quarterback Dalton Bell, defensive tackle Kevin Brown, wide receiver Bumpus, center Ben Claxton, defensive back Marquis Floyd, punter Reggie Hodges, safety Kelin Johnson, center Nick Jones, fullback David Kirtman, guard Pat Murray, TE Joe Newton, linebacker Dallas Sartz, wide receiver Trent Shelton, defensive end Nu'u Tafisi and tackle Kyle Williams.
The suspension of Babineaux and Bernard allows the team to keep both kickers, Olindo Mare and Brandon Coutu, for at least another week.
The Seahawks can begin signing players to their practice squad Sunday after all those released from teams around the league have cleared waivers. The practice squad will be composed of eight players plus offensive lineman Samuel Gutekunst, an NFL international-developmental player.
