LANDOVER, Md. — After two games, the trend is hard to miss. Those Washington quarterbacks are looking pretty sharp under first-year coach Jim Zorn, a former Seahawks quarterbacks coach and quarterback.

Whether it's Jason Campbell with the starters or Todd Collins with the backups, Washington's quarterbacks are putting up the kind of numbers they would love to replicate in the regular season. The duo combined to go 15 for 21 in the first half of Saturday night's 17-14 victory over the Buffalo Bills.

Campbell played the first quarter and went 7 of 10 for 71 yards — and two of the incompletions were batted at the line of scrimmage. He led a 12-play drive that was nearly derailed by two 10-yard penalties before Clinton Portis' 1-yard touchdown run on fourth-and-goal.

"It felt great for us as a team to move the ball that way," Campbell said. "We continued to keep fighting and we persevered through all of those penalties, and I think that it shows the character and focus of this team."

Collins was 8 of 11 for 77 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown pass to running back Ladell Betts. Collins did have one major miscue — a pass picked off by Ashton Youboty that set up a Bills touchdown in the final two minutes of the first half.

Including a 30-16 victory over Indianapolis in last weekend's Hall of Fame game in Canton, Ohio, Campbell and Collins have combined to go 25 of 32 for 241 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.

The Bills, playing their exhibition opener, did not fare as well with starter Trent Edwards, who was 1 of 5 for 18 yards.

Cornerback Shawn Springs, a former Seahawk, had to start at free safety for Washington because of various injuries to teammates.

Other games

Buccaneers 17, at Dolphins 6

Chad Pennington flipped through play charts on the sideline in his new Miami Dolphins jersey, watching his fellow quarterbacks audition for their jobs. The ex-New York Jet also saw why Miami signed him.

Tampa Bay swarmed Miami's struggling quarterbacks, and Michael Bennett had 68 yards rushing and a touchdown to lead the Buccaneers (1-0) over the Dolphins (0-1).

John Beck, Chad Henne and Josh McCown alternated at quarterback for the Dolphins.

At Jaguars 20, Falcons 17

Jacksonville lost three fumbles but still had enough offense to edge Atlanta in the exhibition opener for both teams.

Pierson Prioleau of the Jaguars intercepted a D.J. Shockley pass in the end zone with 12 seconds left.

New Falcons coach Mike Smith, who came to Atlanta after five years as the Jaguars' defensive coordinator, played each of his four quarterbacks.

At Titans 34, Rams 13

Linebacker Keith Bulluck intercepted a tipped pass and returned it 13 yards for a touchdown, and rookie Chris Johnson zipped up the middle 66 yards for a TD as Tennessee (1-0) beat St. Louis (0-1).

At Panthers 23, Colts 20 (OT)

Carolina's DeAngelo Williams rushed for two touchdowns, finishing with nine carries for 55 yards as the Panthers (1-0) defeated Indianapolis (0-2).

Carolina prevailed on John Kasay's 46-yard field goal with 3:53 left in overtime.

At Texans 19, Broncos 16

Texans backup receiver David Anderson caught six passes for 67 yards, including a 16-yard touchdown from Sage Rosenfels as Houston (1-0) edged Denver (0-1). Kris Brown kicked four field goals, including the 25-yard winner on the game's final play.

Rosenfels completed 10 of 15 passes for 137 yards in relief of starting quarterback Matt Schaub, who played one series.

Denver's Jay Cutler went 8 of 10 for 59 yards and ran for a TD.

At Chargers 31, Cowboys 17

Rookie Jacob Hester of Louisiana State scored two rushing touchdowns to make a strong case for one of the Chargers' few open roster spots as San Diego (1-0) downed Dallas (0-1).

Hester gained 49 yards on 13 carries. He is competing with Darren Sproles to replace Michael Turner as the backup for San Diego's two-time defending league rushing champ, LaDainian Tomlinson.

Cornerback Adam Jones, a former Tennessee Titan who was suspended by the league for all of last season, made his Dallas debut.

Jones was called for a pass-interference penalty and missed some tackles.

Notes

• Detroit cornerback Stanley Wilson will miss the rest of the season with a torn Achilles tendon. He was injured in Thursday night's exhibition against the New York Giants.

• The Cleveland Browns released Gary Baxter, ending the safety's hopes of making a comeback from knee surgery this season.

• New England signed cornerback Jeff Shoate, formerly a Denver Bronco, and placed safety Tank Williams on the injured-reserve list.
