NFL | Dolphins sign ex-Jet Chad Pennington

Chad Pennington, cut by the New York Jets after they acquired Brett Favre in a trade, signed with the Miami Dolphins on Friday.

The 32-year-old Pennington, expected to be the starting quarterback for Miami, agreed Friday to the contract worth $11.5 million over two years, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the move hasn't been officially announced.

"We are neither confirming nor denying the report," Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said.

Bill Parcells, the Dolphins' vice president of football operations, drafted Pennington with the 18th overall pick in 2000 when he was director of football operations for the Jets.

The Dolphins, coming off a 1-15 season, will open the season against the Jets in Miami, giving Pennington an immediate chance to face his former team.

Before the signing, Pennington said he was disappointed but had no hard feelings after being released by the Jets.

"I have enjoyed it," Pennington said in his first public comments since his release. "I've learned a lot, become a better professional and a better man because of my experience and my time in New York. I don't regret or feel ashamed about anything that happened to me in my time in New York."

Pennington became the popular face of the Jets for several seasons and arrived in camp competing with Kellen Clemens for the starting job. The Jets jettisoned Pennington to clear salary-cap space once they got Favre from Green Bay.

At Raiders 18, 49ers 6

Michael Bush scored on a 5-yard touchdown run in his first game since breaking his leg while playing college ball for Louisville more than 23 months ago, helping Oakland beat San Francisco.

The 49ers didn't get much from any of their three quarterbacks competing for the starting job. J.T. O'Sullivan, who got the start, turned the ball over twice in four drives. Alex Smith, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2005 draft, led the Niners to a field goal late in the first half but was unable to generate a first down on his other two drives. Shaun Hill threw a pass that was intercepted on his first drive.

At Steelers 16, Eagles 10

Pittsburgh backup quarterback Charlie Batch left the game midway through the second quarter with a broken right collarbone in the Steelers' victory over Philadelphia.

Ben Roethlisberger of the Steelers completed both passes he threw, a pair of 19-yarders, the second to Santonio Holmes for the game's first score to cap an eight-play, 80-yard drive.

Donovan McNabb and the Eagles also looked crisp, and McNabb played far more than Roethlisberger. The Eagles scored a touchdown and a field goal on two early drives, during which McNabb completed 10 of 13 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown, but were shut out the rest of the night.

• Running back Brian Westbrook, 28, and Philadelphia agreed to a new contract, prompting Westbrook to say he will finish his career with the Eagles.

The deal is worth $21 million over three years, including $13 million guaranteed the next two seasons, a person with knowledge of the contract told The Associated Press.

The person, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the negotiations were confidential, said the contract could be worth up to $24 million if Westbrook meets certain escalators.

• Tight end A.J. Schable of the Jets was released from a Cleveland hospital and returned to New York with the team after he was taken from the field on a stretcher because of a helmet-to-helmet hit Thursday in an exhibition game against the Browns, won 24-20 by the Jets.
