NFL | Brett Favre, Packers get more time to talk

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Commissioner Roger Goodell held off Thursday on granting Brett Favre's request for reinstatement, giving the Green Bay Packers and the retired quarterback at least one more day to resolve their standoff.

Meanwhile, a pair of potential solutions reportedly were emerging late Thursday night.

The Wisconsin State Journal and ESPN reported that Favre was considering a 10-year, $20 million marketing and licensing deal offer from the Packers — and staying retired. And the Green Bay Press-Gazette reported the Packers and Cook were in "serious" discussions with the New York Jets about a trade.

The State Journal report said the Packers' deal went on the table soon after Favre retired in March and wasn't a last-ditch attempt to pay Favre to stay away from training camp.

"There isn't a perfect solution to this, but [Packers president] Mark Murphy is at least trying," Favre wrote in a text message to an ESPN reporter, as reported by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "We know what they want and where I stand. His solution, although awkward and unsettling for most, may be the best in the end."

• Eagles DE Chris Clemons returned to practice, two days after he was hospitalized for dehydration.

• LB DeMarcus Ware sat out Cowboys practice, a day after leaving the field early following a hit to the head.

• The Dolphins worked out former Cowboys QB Quincy Carter, but Miami coach Tony Sparano said he has been pleased with all three quarterbacks currently on the roster — Josh McCown, John Beck and rookie Chad Henne — and Carter's workout is not a sign the team wants to move away from them.

• QB JaMarcus Russell returned to Raiders practice after being sidelined for two sessions with a sore elbow.

• The Titans released WR Mike Williams. Tennessee signed Williams last Thanksgiving and told him after the season to get his weight and conditioning under control. Williams weighed around 270 pounds when he signed with Tennessee and lost more than 30 pounds this offseason in an effort to salvage his career.

• WR Chris Henry was suspended for four games but may play the final 12 games of the regular season if he is signed. He was released by Cincinnati in April after his fifth arrest.
