Offensive star of the day: QB Matt Hasselbeck. On a day when the Seahawks' defense outperformed the offense, Hasselbeck continued to display why he has become the leader of the team. Each day at practice, he can be heard yelling encouragement at his teammates, from members of the offensive line to receivers to rookie fullback Owen Schmitt. Hasselbeck on Tuesday mentioned how much quieter camp is this year, but he's determined not to be so silent.

Defensive star of the day: There were plenty during the morning practice, which was the only true workout of the day with a special-teams session in the afternoon. While players on offense struggled to hold on to passes or fend off the pass rush, the defense swarmed. DT Brandon Mebane fought off a block and knocked down RB Maurice Morris for a loss. LB Julian Peterson ran down Hasselbeck for a would-be sack, or at least an incomplete pass. DE Darryl Tapp stood up Morris when he closed the hole on a running play. CBs Marcus Trufant and Kevin Hobbs intercepted passes, and DE Chris Cooper overpowered his man in one-on-one pass-rush drills with a straight bull rush.

Testing mettle: Peterson on Tuesday said his defensive teammates were looking forward to hitting someone else besides a teammate, and the desire to lay the smackdown showed in a little skirmish between first-round pick Lawrence Jackson, a defensive end, and guard Pat Murray. The two shoved each other at the end of a running play during the morning practice, but no punches were thrown.

Just throw your hands in the air: And wave 'em like you just don't care! That's what the Seahawks' running backs appeared to be doing during a drill. Running backs coach Kasey Dunn tossed a ball between two parallel lines of running backs to one player waiting on the other side of the group. The other players in the group would raise their arms skyward with the ball in mid-flight to create a distraction for the receiver, in an effort to simulate gamelike conditions on a short pass with opposing players trying to bat the ball down.
