NFL Wire Notes | Goodell says tapes show nothing new

NEW YORK — Commissioner Roger Goodell said Tuesday that Matt Walsh had provided no new information about the New England Patriots' illicit videotaping tactics, and that the team and its coach, Bill Belichick, would not be punished further.

At a news conference, the league showed videos turned over last week by Walsh, a former Patriots video employee. In the eight tapes — involving six games and five opponents from 2000 to 2002 — the camera was trained on opposing teams' assistant coaches as they sent signals to their players on the field, and then it showed the ensuing plays.

Walsh and Michael Levy, his lawyer, went to Washington to meet with Sen. Arlen Specter, R-Pa., who has criticized the league's Spygate investigation. Specter will have a news conference today.

Goodell said his meeting with Walsh, which lasted more than three hours, put an end to the league's investigation into the Patriots' activities. In September, the team was caught filming the New York Jets' defensive signals in the season opener. After that incident, Goodell fined Belichick $500,000 and the Patriots $250,000. New England also lost a first-round draft pick.

Raiders sign Reece

ALAMEDA, Calif. — Ex-Washington Huskies receiver Marcel Reece, who wasn't taken in last month's draft, signed a contract with the Oakland Raiders.

Notes

• Chicago Bears linebacker Brian Urlacher, unhappy with his contract, told Yahoo.com he expects to boycott a mandatory minicamp that starts May 30.

• Hall of Famer Mike Ditka gained support in his bid to help players who are ailing in retirement. Doctors in Arizona and Pennsylvania announced they are donating medical care to those in need through the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund.

• A Tampa, Fla., judge sentenced ex-running back Troy Hambrick, 31, to five years in prison for selling crack cocaine.

• Buffalo released Kevin Everett, 26, clearing the way for the former tight end to receive disability benefits for the spinal cord injury last season that ended his career.
