Linebacker Rosevelt Colvin, who played on two Super Bowl-winning New England teams but dealt with injuries during his time with the Patriots, was released by the team Tuesday.
Colvin, who went out with a foot injury after 11 games last season, was signed as a free agent from Chicago in 2003 and missed 14 games that year. But Colvin played all 16 regular-season games in each of the next three seasons, registering 20 ½ sacks in that span.
The Patriots also cut linebacker Oscar Lua, who missed all of 2007 with a knee injury after being drafted in the seventh round.
The free-agent signing period starts Friday; several teams cut players to create more salary-cap room.
The New York Jets released three former starters: receiver Justin McCareins, ex-Seahawks cornerback Andre Dyson and guard Adrien Clarke.
Receiver Eddie Kennison was released by Kansas City after seven seasons there.
Washington released receiver Brandon Lloyd, who had a mere 25 catches in two seasons.

• Minnesota has agreed to send receiver Troy Williamson to Jacksonville for a sixth-round pick, a source said.
• Players who re-signed with their teams included linebacker Roderick Green of San Francisco and receiver Antonio Chatman and defensive end Jonathan Fanene of Cincinnati.
• Carolina reportedly is close to bringing back receiver Muhsin Muhammad, who was released by Chicago last week. He played his first nine seasons for Carolina.
• Running back Kevin Faulk, 31, of New England was issued a misdemeanor summons Friday in Lafayette, La., for alleged possession of marijuana. Faulk was on his way to a suite at the Lafayette Cajundome to watch rapper Lil Wayne perform when a search by a sheriff's deputy turned up four marijuana cigarettes, police said.
• ESPN is parting ways with longtime analyst Sean Salisbury. The surprising announcement came hours after the network announced its hiring of Cris Carter from HBO's "Inside the NFL."
