SAN DIEGO — Derek Smith, released Tuesday by the San Francisco 49ers, agreed to a two-year contract with the San Diego Chargers on Sunday.
Smith is expected to play inside linebacker.
He spent seven seasons with the 49ers, and was their leading tackler from 2001 through 2005. He has spent the past three seasons playing in a 3-4 defense, which is what the Chargers use.
Smith, 33, was drafted by Washington in 1997 and played four seasons under Norv Turner, who is entering his second season as San Diego's coach.
Neither general manager A.J. Smith nor Turner immediately returned phone calls seeking comment.
McKinnie is arrested
MIAMI — Minnesota offensive tackle Bryant McKinnie was arrested on suspicion of aggravated battery after a brawl outside a nightclub.
McKinnie, 28, also was charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest without violence, according to a police report.
McKinnie had been thrown out of Club Space by a nightclub security guard and was arguing and spit on Eric Otero, 32, the police report said.
McKinnie was bonded out of jail for $9,000.
Note
• The Chicago Bears and tight end Desmond Clark, 30, agreed to a two-year contract extension through the 2010 season.
Over the past two seasons, Clark has averaged 13.2 yards per reception.
