Seahawks waiting on Holmgren's decision

Coach could reveal future today; Mora would likely be a top candidate to replace him.

Seattle Times staff reporter

Today could be the day Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren announces his decision to either end his tenure or remain with Seattle for at least another season.

And if he does stay in the Hawks' nest, he may well be coaching the team in an upcoming regular-season game played overseas.

Holmgren and his wife, Kathy, recently returned from a short vacation in Arizona, where they were to discuss Holmgren's career options. The NFL Network reported Holmgren was at team headquarters in Kirkland on Monday.

Also on Monday, the Seahawks confirmed that they are one of four teams being considered for a game to be played in the United Kingdom this fall.

If Holmgren, who has one year left on a contract that was extended before the 2006 season, decides to leave, assistant head coach and defensive backs coach Jim Mora is widely considered to be the top candidate to replace him.

Mora, who has been in Seattle for one season after three as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, interviewed for the Washington Redskins head-coaching job last week but later withdrew his name from consideration.

"This past year has been a great experience, both professionally and personally for myself, my wife, Shannon, and our kids," Mora said in a statement released by the Seahawks.

"We are very happy members of this community and the Seattle Seahawks organization."

As for the game overseas, the Seahawks are being considered along with the New Orleans Saints, Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Kansas City Chiefs.

League officials raved about the enthusiasm and support — London's Wembley Stadium was sold out for the New York Giants-Miami Dolphins game in October — for pro football in the UK.

Commissioner Roger Goodell said last week that the NFL would return in 2008, likely in October.

The Seahawks and Bucs are scheduled to play in Tampa, but that game could be moved overseas. New Orleans has Kansas City on its schedule as well, so the NFL could choose that game.

The teams involved, venue and game date are expected to be announced the week of Super Bowl XLII (Jan. 28 to Feb. 3), according to a report from SkySports.com.

The Seahawks were scheduled to play an exhibition game in China last August until the NFL canceled the game to focus on the London venture.
