Seahawks Notebook | Brunell target for Hawks?

The Seahawks' future No. 3 quarterback could come from the past of both coach Mike Holmgren and Seattle.

Mark Brunell, who played for the University of Washington and began his NFL career in Green Bay under Holmgren, may be the Seahawks' target for a No. 3 quarterback.

The Seahawks and the Washington Redskins are believed to have talked about Brunell, now a 36-year-old backup in Washington. The Washington Post reported Friday the Seahawks inquired Thursday about Brunell.

The Packers drafted Brunell in Holmgren's third year as Packers head coach. Brunell played one year in Green Bay before going to Jacksonville. He was replaced at quarterback by Jason Campbell this season.

The No. 3 quarterback has been up in the air for the past couple weeks. David Greene, a third-round pick in 2005, played in only one exhibition game this year and was intercepted three times in a lopsided loss to Green Bay.

"To be honest I was a little disappointed in the quarterback play during the preseason, by David," Holmgren said. "Those guys don't get to play very much, but if you ever have to use them, they're very important. I want them to play better and so we're going to work real hard on getting that done."

Greene didn't play last night and was 6-for-17 passing for 68 yards with three interceptions in exhibitions. Rookie free agent Derek Devine played in two games, including last night, but never attempted a pass.

Changes for starters

The Seahawks' starting lineup against the Oakland Raiders on Thursday was peppered with changes.

On offense, Wallace started for Matt Hasselbeck at quarterback and Nate Burleson opened at split end for D.J. Hackett. Also, rookie Mansfield Wrotto started at right guard for Chris Gray, Leonard Stephens at tight end for Marcus Pollard, Leonard Weaver at fullback for Mack Strong and Maurice Morris for Shaun Alexander at running back.

On defense, Bryce Fisher replaced Patrick Kerney at defensive end, Marcus Tubbs and Craig Terrill were at defensive tackle for Chuck Darby and Rocky Bernard, rookie Will Herring at outside linebacker for Leroy Hill, Niko Koutouvides at middle linebacker for Lofa Tatupu, Pete Hunter at left cornerback for Marcus Trufant, Mike Green at strong safety for Deon Grant and undrafted rookie C.J. Wallace at free safety for Brian Russell.

Wallace started over veteran Michael Boulware, who was not in uniform. The team said Boulware injured an ankle.

Notes

• WR Ben Obomanu, who injured his hamstring in practice this week, might be ready to play when the Seahawks open the regular season Sept. 9.

• DT Tubbs underwent tests on his right knee, but the extent of his injury won't be known until today. CB Josh Wilson suffered a bruised left hip Holmgren did not believe was serious.

• The Seahawks celebrated Alumni Day on Thursday, recognizing several former players. Former DT Jeff Bryant raised the 12th Man flag.
