Hasselbeck injury confirmed; surgery next?

Seattle Times staff reporter

Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck has a torn labrum in his non-throwing shoulder, sources close to the Seahawks confirmed, and is still deciding whether to have surgery on his left shoulder.

Hasselbeck spent Wednesday seeking a second opinion on the injury, the Seahawks said. If he has surgery, it could happen in the next day or two so as to get his recovery started right away.

The surgery could keep him out of action until, at the earliest, the team opens training camp, meaning Hasselbeck would miss mini-camps in May and June. But if Hasselbeck does not have surgery, he could after rehabilitation participate in those minicamps.

Offensive coordinator Gil Haskell told KJR-AM Wednesday that Hasselbeck is probably going to have surgery. The NFL Network reported the story first on Tuesday night, saying Hasselbeck played with the torn labrum during the 2006 season.

According to the network, Hasselbeck underwent an MRI on Tuesday, which the Seahawks did not confirm. The loss of Hasselbeck for at least a large part of the offseason could keep him from putting in the amount of work he'd hoped to do with Nate Burleson and Deion Branch, the two wide receivers the Seahawks acquired last offseason and in September of 2006.

Hasselbeck uses offseason workouts to better acquaint himself with his receivers' tendencies and develop a rhythm with them.
