Josh Brown had tried a total of four field goals in the past four games, making them all. On Monday night, he tried four more, and made all of them, keeping the Seahawks in their game against the Green Bay Packers.
Brown's first field goal of the night, a 45-yarder, was kicked into the wind in the first quarter. It was a low line drive that sneaked over the crossbar.
Under the conditions, with snow and wind, Brown figured 47 yards was the best he could do at that time.
"Your timing has to be better. You have to hit the ball more crisp," he said. "It's no added pressure or anything."
Kicking in such weather was nothing new for Brown.
"In high school quite a bit," he said. "Even at Nebraska, we practice in it quite a bit. It's nothing you ever get used to, but experience definitely plays a big role in it."
Favre was fine
Packers coach Mike McCarthy said his quarterback, Brett Favre, looked fine last night. Favre played in his 232nd consecutive game, despite a throwing elbow injury sustained last week.
"I thought the ball came off his hands accurate," McCarthy said. "I had no communication from him that he was affected by his injury."
Favre played the entire game and was 22 of 36 for 266 yards with one touchdown pass and three interceptions.
Cornering the market
Seahawks cornerbacks made up for lost time. After failing to intercept a pass in any of the first 10 games, they collected three as Kelly Herndon, Kelly Jennings and Marcus Trufant each picked off a pass from Favre.
"We're just sick of ... getting no picks, man," Herndon said. "This is what, 11 games into the season? With the kind of players we have back there, to not have interceptions ... "
Herndon intercepted a pass in the end zone, catching a ball intended for Packers tight end Bubba Franks. Trufant and Jennings had an interception apiece in the second half.
It was Jennings' first interception in the NFL, and it was Trufant's first interception since Nov. 6, 2005, and he said it's the kind of game that could build confidence.
Nate's great returns
Nate Burleson had a rough introduction to returning kickoffs. That's not to say things didn't go well. He averaged 25.8 yards on his five returns with a long of 45, but it is tough work as the coverage team is coming down on a dead run, and he took a good shot on his first return.
"That first one kind of shocked me a little bit," Burleson said. "A nice little pop."
Burleson has been returning punts for the Seahawks the past few weeks and had no objections to the added special-teams duty.
"They could ask me to run down as the gunner on the punt team, I'd do it," he said.
Penance
Linebacker Julian Peterson let a pass bounce off his chest and his knee, failing to catch what would have been Seattle's fourth interception. He promptly dropped to the ground and performed seven push-ups, following a practice defensive players started in training camp.
Whenever they failed to catch a ball for an interception, they performed 10 push-ups. Peterson didn't have time for that many, though, which is why he performed seven.
Tobeck misses game
The Seahawks were without center Robbie Tobeck for the third straight game. Tobeck has an abscess in his left hip that required hospitalization last week.
It appears Tobeck is still under hospital supervision, as coach Mike Holmgren said after the game that Tobeck is being intravenously administered antibiotics for the abscess. Holmgren spoke to Tobeck on Saturday and said Tobeck was doing better.
"I can't tell you when he's going to come back," Holmgren said.
Tobeck missed the previous two games recovering from the flu. Chris Spencer has been the starter in Tobeck's place.
Rock on, Craig Terrill
It's worth noting that Craig Terrill stepped in for owner Paul Allen at a singing gig four days before the game against the Oakland Raiders game on Monday Night Football — and since has played the best four-game stretch of his career. A coincidence? Terrill doesn't think so.
"Rock and roll does something to you," he said.
Singer/songwriter/sackmaster, and now kick blocker. For the second week in a row, the defensive tackle blocked a kick. This time, it came in the second quarter, with the Seahawks trailing 7-3. The Packers attempted a 28-yard field goal, a chip shot most days, but not in this weather, and Terrill rose up so high the ball hit him under his armpit.
Hackett's big day
Receiver D.J. Hackett led the Seahawks with 67 yards and five receptions and scored a touchdown. He spent as much time after the game deflecting inquiries from reporters as he did during the game eluding defensive backs.
Hackett emphasized, over and over, that he is usually the second or third read for quarterback Matt Hasselbeck. He emphasized, over and over, that he needs to be ready when called upon. Hackett usually is — he made big plays for the Seahawks down the stretch last season, too.
"They've always had confidence in me," Hackett said. "They threw me the ball a lot last year when I was in there."
Notes
• Enumclaw's Kasey Kahne, who had six wins on the NASCAR circuit this season and earned more than $6 million, raised the 12th Man flag before the game.
• The temperature at game time was 35 degrees, the coldest for a Seahawks home game in team history. Hail, then snow began falling a half hour before kickoff.
