Readers share their game-day superstitions

I'm under 13.

I've been wearing a torn Seattle Mariners sweatshirt. The Seahawks always do well when the Mariners are stinking it up, so I figured it couldn't hurt.
-- Matthew L., Seattle

I started wearing my blue hooded Seahawk sweatshirt in Minnesota last year. Then I wore in to St. Louis this year. Of course the weather was to nice for sweatshirts for the Jaguar and Redskin games. And I knew we wouldn't play all the starters in Green Bay so I didn't wear it that day. So it's really undefeated. The sweatshirt that is. I better maker sure it's ready for Sunday.
-- Lance L., Sioux Falls, S.D.

I pulled out my blanket (a gift from Seahawks season ticket subscription) and the Seahawks beat the Redskins when Alexander went down. Two weeks ago I wrapped it around me when I went to Qwest Field. This time I'm gonna do it again.
-- Chu, Kenmore

I'm a Seattle native and love the Hawks but now live in Arizona. I wore my No. 37 home jersey for the Jacksonville game (away) and they lost. I again wore it for the Redskins loss (on the road again) and have not worn it for an away game since. I wear it for every home game though. Now what do I do? My beloved Seahawks are the "away" team for the Super Bowl but they'll be wearing their "home blues" like they're at Qwest Field. Do I wear the jersey or not? I have to wear it, right? I guess it's my XL superstition!
-- Justin, Surprise, Ariz.

For Super Bowl Sunday, I'll be in Vegas wearing my Hamlin jersey that I wore to every home game, with my rally towels that I got at the playoff games. In my pocket will be one blue and one green piece of confetti from the NFC Championship game and my ticket stubs. No way they can lose if I do that!
-- Chris M., Auburn

My three boys and I (Parker, Carter and Skyler) don either our home or away jerseys, go to our Seahawk autograph board (which we have over 75 past and present Seahawks) and call onto the great Seahawk god to give the team strength. We then raise the Seahawk flag in our front yard. We then play the AC/DC song "for those about to rock, we salute you" right before kickoff. When the Seahawks have fallen behind this year it is Dad's turn to wear the sacred Shaun Alexander signed "my biggest fan" foamhead. We honestly believe that we won games against the Cowboys, Giants and Titans because of this. There will be no changes for our Super Bowl preparation and I know the great Seahawk god will be shining bright on our mighty heroes this Sunday. Go Seahawks!
-- Dean S., Chandler, Ariz.

I wear the same Seahawk shirt to work on every Friday and all game days. I wear a different Seahawk shirt each Friday night when I play volleyball. My dogs get two treats each after they high-five me to "Go Seahawks" before each game. If I'm not at the game, I sit at the same bar, at the same table, for each game.
-- Missi O.

For this year's playoff run, I took out an old autographed photo of Steve Largent and put it on top of our TV. Steve watches over the Hawks and when they need a little help during the game, I rub his helmet. Needless to say, he'll be there again on Sunday.
-- Chris T., Kaysville, Utah

I always wear my Hawks t-shirt on game day. They haven't lost yet when I've been wearing it and now I have the official locker room cap to go with it. It's a guarantee baybee!
-- Jim R., Laguna Niguel, Calif.

In July I purchased a circa 1988 Seahawks glass tumbler at a garage sale. To my utter amazement, the cup was able to hold the contents of an entire can of soda (in spite of its small appearance). I quickly and logically decided that it had to be a magical goblet, passed down through the ages. Now, before every Seahawks game, if I pour the contents of an entire can of soda into the glass and finish it before the kick-off starts the Seahawks will win. So far, each time this ritual has been correctly completed, the Seahawks have won, and you can be assured I will have polished off an entire glass-full before kick-off on Sunday.
-- Tyler R., Seattle

I have a "12th Man" shirt that I have worn in each of the two playoff games. I bought it at Husky Stadium when we leveled the Broncos! It is just right for the Super Bowl now.
-- Kevin P., Spokane

My family has a game-day football that hasn't touched the ground since we started the playoffs. During each game everyone who is at the party has to hold the ball at least once throughout the game and of course the ball can never touch the ground. We don't plan on dropping the ball on Sunday, and we are sure that the Hawks won't either! Go Hawks!
-- Tyler H., Seattle

I designed and had a Seahawks ring made. It was finished in time for the playoffs. During the first game, I had it on my right middle finger, but the Seahawks offense wasn't doing too good, so I switched it over to the left hand, and we know what happened after that. Now it's Super Bowl time!
-- Quavondo N., Portland, Ore.

I always wake up and put my Hasselbeck jersey on, which oddly enough have not washed since right after the Washington game.
-- Matt G., Seattle

My superstition is probably the most painful of all. I have followed the Hawks since their inception, through the highs and the lows, the good and the bad. However, this year, i have been living in Madrid, Spain, and haven't been able to see even a single minute of football (American, not fútbol). The Super Bowl will be broadcast locally here, beginning at 12:30 a.m., at some of the local Irish pubs. But I have watched the Hawks lose for nearly 30 years, and now that I haven't been able to watch, they are winning, and winning big. So, my superstition is that if I watch, they will lose, and if I don't watch, they will win. In the interest of the Hawks and Hawks fans everywhere, I will forgo watching the game, painful as that will be. Come Monday morning, I will log in to seattletimes.com to read all about their big win.
-- Sean H., Madrid, Spain

1. I cannot sit down during the game, unless the Hawks are winning by 24 points. 2. Start with home jersey, switch to Jim Zorn jersey at halftime. 3. Only drink half of each beer and give the rest to dog.
-- Michael H., Austin, Texas

I bought a new Seahawks jacket just before the first playoff game with a gift certificate my niece and nephew gave me for Christmas. When I got home there was a plastic strapping band in the pocket. I don't know how it got there but I deemed it lucky as we won that game while I carried it, so I took it to the championship too. I then left it in my pocket and I was drawn as one of the season ticket holders to have a chance buy tickets to the Super Bowl so I did and will go with my son and my lucky plastic strap in the pocket. I'm hoping this strap will "hold our team together" for one more big win!
-- Jerry M., Kodiak, Alaska

I built a shrine on top of my TV entertainment center, consisting of: several mini-Buddhas, Japanese Shinto good fortune charms, candles, and blue and green mardi-gras beads from the French Quarter -- all centered around a Seahawks cap. It works, obviously.
-- Jeremy K., Portland, Ore.

For Seahawk game days, I always wear my autographed Steve Hutchinson jersey and the same pair of gray Murano boxer briefs. I cannot wear my Alexander road jersey or we will lose the game (only won one game with the Alexander jersey against San Fran -- which we almost lost!).
-- Chris S., New Orleans

If we're down at half, the hood of my lucky sweatshirt goes on, more famously known as the "KG Rally Cap" -- and then we come back and win. The hood is 6-0 in Seahawks and Huskies games.
-- KG, Renton

I do a special Korean dance before every big game, and blow on my nails at the end of every quarter. Works every time! Go Hawks!
-- Daniel J., Renton

My wife and I have held season tickets since '99. Before the second home game this year, she bought a bag of "Teddy Grams" to take to the game. The bag has never been opened, and we have carted it to every game this year, and our Hawks have won! Because of that very good luck charm, we decided it had to go to Detroit! We believe that very same bag of unopened "Teddy Grams" will be the extra good luck charm for our Seahawks on Sunday.
-- Jeff K., Newcastle, Wash.

I'm a jinx. Whenever I watch the games, on TV or otherwise the team will lose. Case in point; I attended all of the UW football home games last season. So I have to tape the games and watch them afterwards, or I flip on the tube during the game, get a quick score and turn it right off. So if something bad happens, don't blame me!
