Thursday, October 13, 2005 - Page updated at 02:43 PM Fantasy Football Bledsoe leads pack of season's surprises Seattle Times staff
Now that we're through five weeks of the fantasy-football season, let's evaluate some of what has surely led some teams to a fast start. Instead of simply lining up the best overall producers, our ranking takes a look at players who are greatly outperforming their likely draft position — if they were selected at all. So, here's this year's edition of the Faull Fantasy Value Rankings: 1. QB Drew Bledsoe , Cowboys: It sure is nice to see the former Washington State star performing at a high level again. The 33-year-old's 1,351 passing yards rank fourth in the NFL and his 11 total touchdowns have him in a tie for second. When giving it up for Bledsoe don't forget WR Terry Glenn, who has also been a steal in Dallas. 2. K Neal Rackers , Cardinals: Not even on most owners' draft boards, Rackers is clearly the best kicker going with 18 field goals — seven more than second-placers Shayne Graham and Rian Lindell . He's also yet to miss and has nine FGs of 40 yards or more. 3. Colts defense/special teams: Absolute no-brainer here. The Colts have allowed just 29 points while leading the league with 20 sacks. They're second in interceptions with eight and have scored twice. 4. RB Stephen Davis , Panthers: Davis, whose playing status was uncertain after having microfracture surgery on his right knee last November, is averaging just 3.2 yards per carry but has found the end zone seven times. 5. RB Thomas Jones , Bears: Not a very popular choice in drafts because we all assumed he would eventually lose his job to the team's first-round pick, Cedric Benson , Jones has been stellar with three 100-yard-plus efforts in four games and four TDs. He's likely out this week, however, so play Benson against the Vikings' league-worst run defense. 6. QB Eli Manning , Giants: Second-year player has been a nice surprise, throwing for 985 yards and nine TDs while being intercepted just twice. New York's offseason signing of WR Plaxico Burress (396 yards, four TDs) is proving to be a great move for Manning's growth. 7. QB Ben Roethlisberger , Steelers: Big Ben has been a lot more productive than expected in Pittsburgh's run-oriented attack, throwing for 913 yards in four games with eight total TDs and no interceptions.
9. WR Keenan McCardell , Chargers: A teammate of Smith's during Jacksonville's run as one of the league's high-powered passing attacks, the 35-year-old has remained valuable. He hasn't done much in the past two weeks, but his five TDs this season are hard to ignore. 10. RB Carnell Williams , Buccaneers: Rookie would be listed higher if those 88 carries over the first four games didn't take such a toll. Start him • RB Benson, Bears: Favorable matchup against Minnesota in rookie's first start. • WR Eric Parker , Chargers: Emerging option is a solid bye-week fill-in against Oakland. • QB Mark Brunell , Redskins: He has thrown for 2 TDs in each of his three starts and should continue his hot streak against Kansas City. Sit him • RB Fred Taylor , Jaguars: After losing Deuce McAllister , I am forced to play Taylor this week against Pittsburgh. But I wouldn't recommend it after the Steelers' performance against LaDainian Tomlinson on Monday. • WR Michael Clayton , Buccaneers: It's time to give this bust a rest if you can.
