Scarecrow Video recommendations for "Cowboys & Aliens"
If you love cowboys and if you love aliens, boy have we got a movie for you. "Cowboys & Aliens" is released this week, and while we're not quite sure what it's about (the title is a little cryptic), it does bring up an interesting avenue for our weekly recommendations.

We call a movie like this a "mashup movie." Sort of like the Reese's Peanut Butter Cup of movies: two great tastes that taste great together. Merging a western with science fiction isn't entirely new though. The first thing "Cowboys & Aliens" brings to mind is "The Adventures of Brisco County, Jr." a short-lived TV series from 1993. Co-created by Carlton Cuse (who went on to do "Lost"), it stars the legendary Bruce Campbell as the titular hero, a forward thinking, formally educated journeyman/bounty hunter who attempts to track down the no-good bandit what killed his father. Turns out, though, that the bad guys are also searching for a mysterious orb that possesses extraordinary powers.
Campbell is well-known for his character Ash from the "Evil Dead" film series, and we'd be remiss if we didn't mention the third installment," Army of Darkness," as somewhat of a mashup...it's medieval knights against the undead.
One that almost nobody ever thinks of (but you should, especially if you've got little kids) is "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles III." Sure, the Ninja Turtles concept is already sort of a combination of, well, four different things (Teenagers, mutants, ninjas and turtles. Duh), but this third film sees the boys transported back through time to feudal Japan. So really it should be Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle Samurai.
Or if you're just hungry for a story that pits two disparate entities against each other, look no further than this list of films: Alien vs. Ninja, Boa vs. Python, Women vs. Men, Eagle vs. Shark, Gamera vs. Gaos, Mafia vs. Ninja, Freddy vs. Jason, Kung Fu vs. Yoga, FBI vs. Dr. Mabuse, Shaolin vs. Lama, Zombies vs. Satan, Batman vs. Dracula or Kramer vs. Kramer.
See you next week!
