U.S. Nordic combined team poised for historic medal

Posted by Ron Judd

WHISTLER, B.C. -- The U.S. men's nordic combined team is poised to make history at Whistler Olympic Park, after finishing a close second behind Finland in the jumping portion of the team nordic combined.

The U.S. team of Bill Demong, Johnny Spillane, Todd Lodwick and Brett Camerota will have only a 2-second deficit behind leader Finland in the staggered start for the 5K cross country relay, which begins at 2 p.m.

The Americans are strong skiers. Their jump performance this morning puts them in strong medal position. A medal in the team event would be the first in history for America, which signaled its ascension in the sport by winning four medals at last year's world championships in the Czech Republic.

In that competition, the U.S. was poised to capture the team medal but was disqualified when Demong, of Vermontville, N.Y., could not find his competition bib -- later discovered inside his suit.

Today, "Everyone's giving me a hard time about making sure I have my bib," Demong quipped after jumping 131.5 meters on the large hill at Whistler Olympic Park.

Camerota, of Park City, the first jumper and the least-experienced team member, got the U.S. off to a strong start with a jump of 133.5 meters. Veteran Olympian Lodwick, of Steamboat Springs, Colo., jumped second, sailing 136.5 meters -- one of the longest jumps of the day.

Demong's jump kept the U.S. atop the leader board. It took a 136.0-meter jump from Finland in the fourth round to allow the Finns to creep ahead of the U.S. Spillane jumped 134 meters for the U.S. in that grouping.

The cross-country relay portion of the event begins at 2 p.m.

Spillane won America's first medal in the event with a silver in the individual small hill competition earler in the Games.
