Video: Apolo Anton Ohno on cars, dating, and that big spud contract

Posted by Ron Judd

As mentioned earlier here, we dropped in on short-trackers and soon-to-be Vancouver Olympians Apolo Anton Ohno and J.R. Celski at the Olympic Oval in Kearns last week to watch them prep for the Games.

While there, we shot some quick video of the workouts, as well as some "Quick Questions" sessions with Ohno and Celski, both of whom are very good sports, off the ice as well as on.

Some context: In the Ohno interview below at the Olympic Oval, we're having some fun with Apolo for his sponsorship contract with Washington Potatoes and Alaska Airlines. It's worth noting that two Washington Olympians, Ohno and cross-country ski racer Torin Koos, are sponsored by locally grown items in your produce aisle. More exciting news about Koos and USA Pears coming here soon. Meanwhile, note how on the ball Ohno is when hit with an unexpected spud query:

Both Ohno and J.R. Celski are fairly recent residents of Salt Lake City, where the U.S. speedskating (short and long track) programs moved last year from Colorado Springs, Colo. Both admit the dry lands of the Wasatch Front have taken some getting used to. Celski, in particular, opines in his video that the Great Salt Lake really ain't so great, when it comes to large bodies of water to live near. Celski is nearing full recovery from a nasty gash from his own skate suffered at the U.S. Olympic Trials. It left a major scar on his thigh.

Coming up soon in the Quick Questions spotlight: Nordic-combined athlete Bill Demong of Vermontville, N.Y., showing us his rather large and unusual tattoo in the driveway of his house in Park City, Utah.
