Seattle Times business reporter

Consumers lined up for free perfume, makeup and moisturizers at major departments stores today as part of a class-action legal settlement including Seattle-based Nordstrom.

The stores are expected to distribute $175 million worth of freebies to settle a lawsuit that accused them of conspiring with cosmetics companies to fix prices.

The settlement allows consumers who bought certain cosmetics between May 29, 1994, and July 16, 2003, to receive one free product on a first-come, first-served basis, while supplies last. The freebies will be available for up to seven days. Returns or exchanges are prohibited.

Other stores named in the class-action suit include Gottschalks, Macy's, Neiman Marcus and Saks Fifth Avenue. High-end cosmetics brands such as Chanel, Estee Lauder and L'Oreal USA also were named as defendants. All have denied wrongdoing.

Detailed information about the giveaway is at www.cosmeticssettlement.com.
