Ilwaco reopens soon for salmon fishing

Posted by Mark Yuasa

The ocean off the South Coast at Ilwaco will reopen for salmon fishing from Sept. 7-30, after state Fish and Wildlife officials determined enough coho remained in the catch quota to keep the salmon fishery alive.

"My expectation is that they should get through the majority of this month under the projected quota of 13,000 coho," said Wendy Beeghly, a state Fish and Wildlife biologist. "Effort does fall off after Labor Day when people have somewhere else [to go fishing] or other things to do."

Anglers are also allowed to keep chinook and pinks in their two-fish daily limits.

Just up the coast, "effort is holding up at Westport right now, and that is unusual for this time of the season," Beeghly said.

"I've seen some projections and it looks like they'll make it through or around Sept. 20, but they could run into some problems if catch levels remain high. Outside of that I expect fishing between Neah Bay, La Push, Ilwaco and Westport will get through their entire seasons."
