I'm getting to this a little late, thanks to the Great Seattle Ice Storm of 2012 -- this interview in the New York Times was actually published earlier in the week. (I hope this finds all of you warm and cozy and telecommuting . . . me, I'm at the office, watching the snow/rain/ice/whatever is is falling.) Anyhoo, because I dearly love Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby," and dearly love most of Luhrmann's movies, and nonetheless would NEVER have thought of combining the two, I'm very intrigued by this project. It's opening Christmas week, and has a marvelous cast, headed by Leonardo DiCaprio as Jay Gatsby, Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan, and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway. And it's in 3D, which I'm . . . well, not sure about, but I'm going to give Luhrmann the benefit of the doubt, at least for now. ("Hugo," recently, gave me a glimmer of hope for the artful use of 3D.) Here's an excerpt from the article, which is well worth a read if you're interested:

"The 'special effect' in this movie is seeing fine actors in the prime of their acting careers tearing each other apart," Mr. Luhrmann explained in a telephone interview this week.

He spoke of using 3-D not to create thrilling vistas or coming-at-you threats, but rather to find a new intimacy in film. He referred particularly to a climactic scene in which Daisy's husband, Tom Buchanan (played by Joel Edgerton), confronts Mr. DiCaprio's Gatsby in a suite at the Plaza hotel, all in three dimensions.

"How do you make it feel like you're inside the room?" he asked.
