Two Lincoln movies -- and, best headline of the week

Posted by Moira Macdonald

Words cannot adequately describe how much I love this New York Times headline, from Tuesday:

"Aside From the Vampires, Lincoln Film Seeks Accuracy"

The article discusses the making of "Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter," a 3D movie currently in production and due to open in theaters in June 2012. Benjamin Walker, who previously starred in the stage production "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson," plays Lincoln; Mary Elizabeth Winstead is the First Lady; and Moscow-based filmmaker Timur Bekmambetov directs. And the plot? Here's the description:

The "Vampire Hunter" film, like the book, follows Lincoln from his boyhood on the frontier through his assassination by John Wilkes Booth and -- because this is a vampire story -- beyond. Young Lincoln, having learned that his grandfather and mother were killed by vampires, vows to kill every last blood-sucker in a country that is crawling with them.

Looking forward! OK then. Meanwhile, on a more serious note, Steven Spielberg's historical drama "Lincoln," based on historian Doris Kearns Goodwin's book "Team of Rivals" and adapted by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Tony Kushner, has finished its primary casting and will begin shooting in the fall. Daniel Day Lewis will play the President; Sally Field his wife Mary Todd Lincoln; Tommy Lee Jones has been cast as Republican leader Thaddeus Stevens; and Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the Lincolns' eldest son, Robert Todd Lincoln. Also in the cast are Hal Holbrook, James Spader, John Hawkes, and Tim Blake Nelson. The film is scheduled to hit theaters in late 2012; no vampires are currently involved.
