A martini with "Sabrina"? Matching drinks to DVDs
Posted by Moira Macdonald
Every day, you learn something new, and today I learned that there are people out there -- well, at least one person anyway -- who spend time matching their drinks to their DVDs to create an enhanced viewing experience. This sounds like fun, no? Wendell Jamieson, in today's New York Times food section, says that he's been coordinating movies and beverages -- in moderation -- for at least 15 years. "It adds a new dimension -- Alc-O-Vision? -- to the plot, the photography and, especially, the sense of immersion if the film takes place in the same country from which the drink in my hand originated," he writes. He goes on to suggest a chilled martini with "Sabrina" (straight up, with olives), absinthe with "A Very Long Engagement" (and, I'll add, with "Moulin Rouge" as well), a very specific single-malt Scotch (The Balvenie Doublewood 12-year-old, neat) to warm your bones while watching "I Know Where I'm Going!," an old-fashioned (rye with a dash of bitters and a sugar cube) for "Mad Men." Though I've watched all of these accompanied solely by Diet Coke or pinot grigio (hey, they go with everything) and they worked just fine, I can see what he's getting at. Does anyone else do this? Any other good combo suggestions?
