Colin Firth, in and out of water

Posted by Moira Macdonald

Well, it's the weekend, and I'm just going to bow to the inevitable here at Popcorn & Prejudice HQ. Because Colin Firth this week received his first Oscar nomination (for his beautiful work in "A Single Man"), let's take a look back at the scene that, for so many, put Firth on the map -- a scene that, let us note, is approaching a million views on YouTube. Yes, I'm talking about the BBC "Pride & Prejudice," and Mr. Darcy's swim in the lake. Here you go:

OK, that was lovely and all, but I think the greatest thing to come out of that scene is the one below, filmed for the second "Bridget Jones' Diary" movie yet for some reason not included in the film (it's on the DVD). In it, journalist Bridget interviews Firth (who's playing himself) about a new project, but can't resist going back, perpetually, to the lake scene. "After the bit in the lake," she asks, caught up in the deliciousness of it all, "did they have to keep spraying you, with a squirter full of water?

Now, how can you watch this scene and not adore Colin Firth? Congratulations on the nomination, to a fine actor and a very good sport. And happy weekend, all.
