Meryl & Julia (and Barbara)
Posted by Moira Macdonald
Everybody seen those "Julie & Julia" trailers? Everyone excited about hearing Meryl Streep take a crack at The Voice -- that wonderful, burbling, roller-coaster, joie-de-vivre trill that was Julia Child? Did any of you, like me, watch reruns of her cooking shows in the '80s just to hear The Voice -- and to try to affectionately imitate it? (I must say that I've received fine reviews for my own Julia Child impression, but I have the advantage of having an aunt who sounds quite a bit like her. If you buy me enough pinot grigio, and maybe some sole meuniere, I'll do it for you.)
Streep chatted with Barbara Walters recently about doing The Voice -- and a publicist sent me a snippet of the interview (held on Walters' SIRIUS XM radio show):
BARBARA WALTERS: How did you capture that voice? So that it's yours and hers and not just an imitation.[Laughing]
MERYL STREEP: Well, Barbara, there are certain people in our culture...[who] have been imitated by everybody in the world. One of them is Julia Child, and the other one is you.
[Laughing]
MERYL STREEP: We all have this memory [of Julia Child]. I didn't have to learn it, it was already in my body. It's not a thing that is forgettable. Because she was so distinctly and completely herself.
Anyone out there doubt that Streep could do Walters' voice better even than Walters does herself? I don't.
