Spider-Man and Jerry Lewis on Broadway, and more
Posted by Moira Macdonald
For those intrigued by the perpetual tangle of movies and theater, here's some Hollywood-to-Broadway news:
-- Evan Rachel Wood (currently seen on screen in Woody Allen's "Whatever Works") will play Mary Jane Watson and Alan Cumming (best known to movie audiences as the fabulous Nightcrawler in "X2") have been announced to star in the stage musical "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark." (Yes, the title's sort of odd. So is the idea. Never mind; odd sometimes works.) Julie Taymor, who directed Wood in "Across the Universe," will direct; the show will begin previews in February 2010. No one has yet been announced to play Peter Parker/Spider-Man; stay tuned.
-- Jerry Lewis -- yes, that Jerry Lewis, who's now 83 -- will direct a Broadway musical adaptation of "The Nutty Professor." His 1963 "Nutty Professor," mind you, not the Eddie Murphy one. Marvin Hamlisch ("A Chorus Line") will write the music, Rupert Holmes ("Drood") will write lyrics and book. The show is planned for the 2010-2011 season.
-- And Anne Hathaway continues her breakthrough year, following up her Oscar nomination (for "Rachel Getting Married") with a triumph on stage. She's getting sparkling reviews for her work in "Twelfth Night," currently on display at the Delacorte Theater in New York's Central Park. Good for her.
