Anybody need an "X-Files" morgue drawer?
Posted by Moira Macdonald
Here's a wistful story, in today's New York Times: 20th Century Props, an independently owned Hollywood prop shop with an inventory of 93,572 items (including many formerly owned by 20th Century Fox, which sold off its studio prop shop years ago), is going out of business; yet another casualty of the economy. Owner Harvey Schwartz is selling the entire inventory at auction, including the morgue from "The X-Files," some graceful chandeliers from "Miracle on 34th Street," a desk from "The Aviator" (formerly owned by the real Howard Hughes) and a robotic torso used by Arnold Schwarzenegger in "Terminator 3." Brooks Barnes' story, which explains how prop shops (which were once standard-issue for all movie and television studios) are rapidly disappearing, is a great read; don't miss the slide-show photos too.
