Gay-marriage referendum language challenged
Same-sex marriage opponents are challenging the ballot language for Referendum 74, the measure that seeks to repeal the same-sex marriage bill passed by the Legislature and signed by the governor earlier this month.
The ballot description and summary are intended to help voters understand clearly what they are being asked to vote on and the consequences of that vote.
Preserve Marriage Washington, the group seeking to reverse the Legislature's action, proposed this language:
The Attorney General's amended the proposed language to read:
A hearing date has not yet been set in Thurston County Superior Court, which under state law has sole discretion of setting the language.
Supporters of the new law are also expected to challenge the ballot title and have until Monday to do so. Typically, all challenges are heard at the same hearing.
