Bellevue Chamber bucks Kemper Freeman, opposes I-1125

Posted by Andrew Garber

The Bellevue Chamber of Commerce announced its opposition Thursday to Tim Eyman's Initiative 1125.

Eyman's measure would upend state plans to control congestion and finance costly highway projects using tolls. It also has a provision aimed at preventing Sound Transit from bringing light rail across the Interstate 90 bridge.

The chamber's position is notable given that one of Bellevue's most prominent businessmen, Kemper Freeman, is the biggest backer of I-1125, contributing more than $1 million to the campaign.

A statement released by the chamber said: "Due to concerns about the potential negative impact on the Washington State transportation system, including on the SR 520 Bridge, the Chamber opposes I-1125."

The chamber said it supports the liquor privatization initiative, I-1183, backed by Costco "as a way to end the state's monopoly of liquor sales and provide a responsible
way for businesses to get engaged in this market."

The measure would privatize the state liquor system.

Congratulations to the Bellevue Chamber. Even if I-1125 passes, it will probably be challenged and invalidated by the court, since it...  Posted on October 7, 2011 at 12:07 PM by enjoytheride. Jump to comment
A nice little boycott of Bellevue Square is in order. Too difficult to get there anyway.  Posted on October 7, 2011 at 11:38 AM by cadre. Jump to comment
