Update 4:30 p.m.: added comments from Stanzel

Sen. Maria Cantwell reported raising nearly $1.4 million in the second quarter of this year for her reelection campaign, according to her latest filing to the Federal Election Commission.

That brings the two-term Democrat to about $2.3 million cash-on-hand in her bid to win a third term next year. Republicans, meanwhile, are still looking for a credible challenger to run against Cantwell.

The latest rumor, floated by the relatively new conservative blog NWDailyMarker, had Scott Stanzel, a former White House deputy press secretary (under George W. Bush) considering a run.

Stanzel served last year as the manager of the campaign against I-1098, the measure which would have placed an income tax on the wealthiest Washingtonians while lowering some business and property taxes. More than 64 percent of voters rejected the proposal.

In an email, Stanzel confirmed he's been talking about a run and riffed on Cantwell "burying our children and grandchildren in a blizzard of debt." But Stanzel said for the immediate future he's planning his September wedding "to the woman of my dreams." Any decision on the Senate race will have to come after that.
