King County approves voluntary vending machine guidelines

Posted by Matt Kreamer

From Times reporter David Krueger:

The King County Board of Health on Thursday unanimously approved new guidelines that encourage healthier food in vending machines.

The King County Healthy Vending Guidelines are voluntary, but officials hope that community-based organizations and local governments will follow them and offer healthier options for those who seek to grab a quick snack or beverage.

"Many of us eat up to half of our meals outside the home," said Board of Health Chair Joe McDermott in a statement. "The Healthy Vending Guidelines will make it easier for King County residents to make healthy choices while eating on-the-go."

The guidelines feature three categories of foods and beverages: healthiest, healthier and those that should be limited. That's based on the 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The new guidelines are in addition King County's Healthy Incentives program, which offers 20 percent of healthier options in many vending machines.

Good lord. A bunch of bureaucrats with extra time on their hands? Of course they are voluntary, to make them required would be absurd.  Posted on April 24, 2011 at 4:17 PM by 50 Yr Old Professional. Jump to comment
