Straw poll: WA GOP activists like Daniels for President

Posted by Jim Brunner

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels may not be a household name, but the potential 2012 Presidential contender beat out better-known politicians in a straw poll of Washington state GOP activists over the weekend.

The poll emerged Sunday from the 300-plus activists and politicians gathered in Ocean Shores for the Roanoke Conference

Sixteen potential GOP presidential candidates received votes. Daniels led with 31 percent, well above second-place finisher Mitt Romney of Massachussetts (14 percent.)

Former Gov. Sarah Palin and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich were way down the list, with just 3 percent each. Tea party favorite Michelle Bachman got just 1 percent. This was clearly not a tea-party event.

In its second year, the Roanoke conference looks like it is becoming a must-attend event for mainstream Republican leaders.

Speakers this time included former White House press secretary Dana Perino and newly elected state GOP chairman Kirby Wilbur. State Attorney General Rob McKenna gave the opening address and had a prominent campaign presence there, according to Twitter reports over the weekend.

Take note Main Stream Media - Sarah Palin got 3% of the vote. Presuming all 300 people at this event voted, that's 9 votes. Can we please...  Posted on January 31, 2011 at 9:34 AM by SWIslander. Jump to comment
Anyone but Bachman or Palin.  Posted on January 31, 2011 at 10:11 AM by seattle native2. Jump to comment
As someone who attended the conference, I don't think it was fair to categorize the annual event as just "mainstream" Republicans....  Posted on January 31, 2011 at 11:42 AM by IrishJin13. Jump to comment
