Murray has the edge over Rossi in out-of-state cash

Posted by Jim Brunner

As I noted Tuesday, Republican Dino Rossi is in Texas today raising money for his U.S. Senate campaign.

Rossi wasn't exactly eager to publicize his Texas jaunt. Democrats have gleefully pointed out Rossi's earlier fundraisers with Wall Street interests in Washington, D.C., and New York.

But whose campaign gets more out-of-state cash?

So far, it's incumbent Democratic Sen. Patty Murray -- by a big margin, according to campaign finance data analyzed by the Center for Responsive Politics, a nonpartisan watchdog group.

Murray has received more than $1.5 million in out-of-state contributions, according to the group. That's 36 percent of the money she's raised in the last couple years run-up to this election.

In his initial fundraising, Rossi has taken in $162,000 from out-of-state donors, or about 17 percent of his early totals.

Several caveats:

This data is not entirely up-to-date. The 36 percent figure also appears to include just Murray's last couple years of fundraising, not the entire five-plus years she has been raising reelection money. (She's raised nearly $12 million since 2005.)

And it only includes about the first $1 million of Rossi's fundraising. (He's raised about $2 million since entering the race in late May.)

Finally, the data only includes individual contributions of $200 or more (campaigns don't have to disclose detail for donations below that amount.) It also doesn't include PACs, but Murray has a big edge in that category too.

Those caveats aside, this snapshot, plus data from previous years, confirms that Murray regularly receives big chunks of out-of-state money, including plenty of help from lobbyists.

Something to keep in mind if Democrats try to paint Rossi as the only one beholden to out-of-state interests.

We'll get a better handle on the campaign funding sources for both candidates when they file new financial reports in mid-October.
