Party of the Future gives the council a bad report card

Posted by Emily Heffter

An urbanist group called Party of the Future has graded the 2009 performance of all nine Seattle City Council members and gave bad marks to almost all of them.

The Party of the Future is a project of the Friends of Seattle group that backed Mayor Mike McGinn and Councilmember Mike O'Brien in their bids for election last year. The group based its grades on council members' leadership and votes on three things: the deep-bore tunnel, allowing people to build backyard cottages, and the so-called "head tax."

Everyone but former council member Richard McIver got a D. McIver, who voted to keep the head tax, received a C+. All the grades are here.

Party of the Future says it will grade council members again this year. "The City Council has the power and obligation to the enact laws and budgets needed to meet these challenges," they wrote on the report card. "This report card evaluates council members'
decisions on legislation that either helps or hurts the goal of Seattle becoming a sustainable, livable, and affordable community."
