Seattle City Council forms "bike caucus"

Posted by Emily Heffter

The Seattle City Council has formed a four-member "bike caucus" that starts meeting next week to advance bicycle-friendly policies and priorities for spending money.

Chuck Ayers, executive director of the Cascade Bicycle Club, said Tuesday morning at the club's fundraising breakfast that "almost every City Council member wanted to be on the caucus."

Ayers said the group will meet to advance the "bike agenda."

The Cascade Bicycle Club is fresh off an election season of wins, and as Ayers pointed out to me after his breakfast, almost every council member is a cyclist. Mayor Mike McGinn, of course, used stickers and posters throughout his campaign that advertised "Mike bikes."

McGinn, County Executive Dow Constantine, Metropolitan King County Council Chairman Bob Ferguson and Seattle City Council President Richard Conlin all support Cascade, and vice versa. Now the club hopes to find funding for projects.

The city's bicycle master plan is underfunded by $200 million, for example, McGinn said at the breakfast.
