House Democrats propose $758 million in new taxes

Posted by Andrew Garber

House Democrats on Monday proposed a $758 million tax package that includes closing numerous tax exemptions, increasing the cigarette tax and boosting the tax on bottled water, candy and gum.

There's no proposed increase in the state sales tax. It looks like they're largely proposing taxes that have already appeared in plans by Senate Democrats and the governor. However, the overall tax package is about $100 million less than what House Democrats originally said they'd propose.

Senate Democrats have proposed about $900 million in taxes, including a three-tenths of a cent increase in the state sales tax, and Gov. Chris Gregoire came up with a package that raises about as much money as the House plan.

Some of the House Democrats' proposals include repealing the first mortgage deduction, and the out-of-state sales tax exemption; increasing the cigarette tax by $1 a pack and extending the state sales tax to candy, gum and janitorial services.

More later. See their press release.
