Senate Dems release "jobs strategy"

Posted by Andrew Garber

Senate Democrats held a long news conference at lunch time to highlight a hodgepodge of bills they say would create jobs. They just don't know how many.

The package includes bills that would provide tax credits for small businesses with 10 or fewer employees that add jobs and expand state programs to retrain workers. Lawmakers also referred to jobs already being created by previously approved transportation projects.

When asked how many new jobs the various bills would create, nobody would hazard a guess.

Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, D-Spokane, issued a statement saying: "Our strategy is like a bull's eye, putting the existing jobs and businesses that are essential to our recovery at the center, and rippling steadily outward toward the jobs of the future that are the key to our competitiveness over the long term."

The state House passed a bill last week that would create an estimated 38,000 jobs by issuing $860 million in state bonds to pay for energy-efficiency upgrades at schools across the state. The measure is now in the Senate. It was not listed as part of the Senate package today.
