School board candidates in video and cyberspace

Posted by Linda Shaw

Two of the four candidates for Seattle School Board are moving well beyond the traditional mailer in their campaign ads this year.

Kay Smith-Blum is running what she calls an eco-campaign for the District 5 seat, with billboards, emails and online ads, but no mailers or yard signs.

Now Betty Patu, running for the District 7 seat, has produced a low-budget video ($650 total cost) that she hopes to air this weekend on several cable channels at a cost of about $9,000, according to her daughter and campaign manager, Virginia Owens.

Smith-Blum is running against incumbent Mary Bass, who recently reported about $24,000 in loans to her campaign, and has sent out a glossy mailer.

Patu's opponent is Wilson Chin, who is doing a lot of doorbelling and phonebanking and has sent out a mailer as well.

All four candidates also have their own Facebook pages.
