Poll: Eyman's latest initiative may go down; R-71 leading

Posted by Jim Brunner

A new poll suggests voters may be souring on Tim Eyman's latest tax-limiting initiative, I-1033.

The Washington Poll, conducted by UW researchers, found 49 percent of likely voters oppose the measure, with 40 percent supporting it. Ten percent were undecided.

The gap was even larger among voters who said they'd already mailed in their ballots -- 56 percent reported voting no compared with 44 percent voting yes.

The poll also contains good news for backers of Ref. 71, which would uphold the state's recently expanded domestic-partnership law.

It found 57 percent support among likely voters, compared to 38 percent opposed. Only 5 percent said they were undecided.

The poll was based on interviews with 724 registered voters statewide, for a margin of error of 3.6 percent.

The poll also looked at the Seattle mayoral and county executive races. However, the pollsters have not yet disclosed the size of their samples for those races. I've got a call and e-mail into them and will report back when I get that information.
